The singer performed the beloved One Direction song during a Boston show to honor the late singer

While performing at TD Garden in Boston, Maggie Rogers paused the concert to remember Liam Payne, the former One Direction member who died at the age of 31 after falling from a hotel room in Argentina on Wednesday.

Rogers addressed the crowd on Thursday while sitting at the piano and said, “This week, in particular, I’ve been thinking how precious life is and how quickly things can change.” The singer shared how a childhood friend broke the news that Payne had died. “We’re just about the same age,” said Rogers, who is a year younger than Payne. “I wanted to just honor anyone who has been touched by [One Direction’s] music.”

Accompanied by just the piano, Rogers delivered a raw, slowed-down rendition of the chorus: “We’re only getting older, baby/And I’ve been thinking about it lately/Does it ever drive you crazy/Just how fast the night changes?” The sold-out stadium echoed as the crowd sang the moving lyrics, “Everything that you’ve ever dreamed of/Disappearing when you wake up/But there’s nothing to be afraid of/Even when the night changes./It will never change me and you.”

Former One Directions bandmates Harry StylesLouis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik have shared their own personal tributes, while the band shared a statement on Thursday. “In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say,” One Direction wrote. “But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever.”
