The Richmond RCMP is asking the public for help after a woman drowned in the Fraser River earlier this month.

According to Mounties, officers received a report of a “woman in distress” yelling for help in the river on Oct. 3.

“Richmond RCMP immediately requested the assistance of the Canadian Coast Guard while frontline officers attended the area. Richmond RCMP Frontline officers located the woman who was unconscious in the river near the No 2 Rd bridge,” Corp. Adriana O’Malley shared on Monday.

With the help of a nearby boater, an officer was able to pull her in from the river. “The officer immediately began CPR while she was transported back to shore,” police say.

The woman was taken to hospital, but despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead.

“Tragically despite all of the valiant efforts of all those involved, the woman did not survive,” said O’Malley. “While the death does not appear to be suspicious, we are attempting to retrace the movements of the deceased prior to her being located in the Fraser River.”

Mounties say that through their initial investigation, they have found footage of the woman walking north along No. 2 Road toward the No. 2 Road Bridge.

The Richmond RCMP is now asking for anyone who was driving and has dashcam footage between 4:45 p.m. and 5:10 p.m. on Oct. 3 to come forward.

Police are also asking any businesses in the No. 2 Road/Westminster Highway and Russ Baker Way/No. 2 Road bridge who have not spoken with officers to contact police at 604-278-1212 and quote file number 2024-31464.
