• Harvest winter squash and pumpkins before frost. For best storage quality, avoid nicks and bruises and leave an inch or two of stem on each fruit.
• Dig sweet potatoes before the vines are killed by frost.
• Plant garlic now for harvest next summer. Use only the largest cloves from the largest bulbs. Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil.
• Complete cool-season lawn seeding projects ASAP. Seed must sprout and grow for 6 to 8 weeks to establish a root system vigorous enough to stand up to winter conditions.
• Leave Christmas cactus, Kalanchoe and potted azalea houseplants outdoors until night temperatures drop into the 40s. This will satisfy their short day/cool night requirements for setting flower buds that will bloom indoors later this winter.
