CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A Cape Coral man stopped a would-be thief from stealing his truck right out of his driveway early Sunday morning.

The crook crept up the driveway belonging to Fernando Gonzalez around 2 a.m., according to security camera video.

Gonzalez just happened to be awake, hanging out in his man cave that’s set up in his garage.

“I’m in the garage because I got a TV in there,” he said. “I got a little living room set up. It’s like 2 a.m…I hear some noise going on outside. I’m thinking it’s the coyotes, you know, looking for my cats.”

Little does he know, a suspect was riding through the darkness of night on an electric scooter. His security cameras picked up the man riding beneath a street light.

The man hit the brakes outside of Gonzalez’s home. His security cameras were recording as the man turns the lens away from the driveway, but not before they could catch this shot of his face.

“He had an electric scooter. A white hoodie. He had a mask,” Gonzalez said.

By the time he looked at his camera, the suspect already tried getting into his Ford F-150 Limited Edition truck. He tried using the antenna as a tool to break in.

“I just grabbed the flashlight. I just opened the garage and I jumped in the truck,” he said.

But the guy was long gone, possibly scooting away through a nearby field. However, something else caught Gonzalez’s attention: a sports car on a dead-end part of his street.

“I see the Maserati coming pretty quickly down, passes in front of my house. I go behind it. He made a couple weird u-turns,” he said.

What’s even more strange to Fernando is that a very similar crime happened just two weeks ago. Someone turned the cameras at another home just ten minutes away on Kismet Parkway back on July 5. The suspect there got away with a Ford F-450 pickup truck, another high-end vehicle.

“You’re talking $120,000-$130,000 truck,” said Joe Melvin, who owns the stolen truck. “Whoever did it, [is] definitely a pro.”

Could it be the same person?

“Yes, I do. I really do,” Gonzalez said. “I feel like it was a professional and were targeting trucks like mine.”

There’s no way to tell unless this guy is caught, and you could help make that happen. If this suspect looks familiar, pick up the phone and call SWFL CrimeStoppers.
