NAPLES, Fla. – The Naples Zoo is getting ready to welcome four Bornean Orangutans.
For the first time in 50 years, these red-haired, great apes are being introduced to the zoo from Tampa.
43-year-old DeeDee is mother to 14-year-old RanDee and 5-year-old Dira.
DeeDee is also grandmother to RanDee’s son, 2-year-old, Ripley.
All the construction, permits, and inspections are complete, according to a Tweet from the Naples Zoo.
Their habitat is surrounded by large banyan trees that weave into the new enclosure creating a natural environment and allowing for fun places for them to climb, stated a press release from the Naples Zoo.
Guests will be face-to-face with the orangutans with two large viewing windows.
These animals are usually found in the forests of Indonesia and Malaysia and have fallen victim to decreasing populations, according to the release.
Their homes are being transformed into palm oil plantations that are used to create food, cosmetics, household goods, and more.
Before moving to Naples, the four orangutans must have a veterinary exam and diagnostics to make sure they are healthy enough to travel.
Though there is no official date for their arrival, the animals are expected to arrive in August.
