LEE COUNTY, Fla. — The high school football season in Southwest Florida is right around the corner. Games get underway in three weeks, while practices start on August 1. However, there was a practice held at Riverdale High School on Thursday night, but it wasn’t for the players. It was for their moms.
“Tonight just about the moms,” Riverdale football head coach Kendoll Gibson said.
The sounds of football practice filled the air at Riverdale on Thursday night. However, it wasn’t a normal practice, it was the Raiders’ second annual Moms Clinic. The team invited all of the players’ moms to a clinic where they ran them through drills and taught them everything they needed to know about the sport.
“It was super fun,” Jamie Cabral, mother of Dillon Cabral, said.
This was the second time the Raiders have hosted the event. Last year was so successful, the moms were begging to do it again.
“The moms literally right after the camp were shooting us ideas of what they think should transpire the following year,” Gibson said. “It was something we just had to do.”
During the clinic, roles were reversed. Instead of moms holding all the power, it was the kids who told their parents what to do.
“[The players] cheer them on,” Gibson said. “They joke with them. They love it. I think they love it more than the moms.”
Some players even walked out of the clinic with bragging rights because their moms looked like they deserve a spot on varsity.
“I got bragging rights now,” Dillon Cabral said. “My mom‘s going for the QB spot.”
The clinic wrapped up with some instructional presentations on football rules, proper nutrition and other important topics.
After Thursday’s clinic, the moms are ready for football season. Now it’s time for their sons to gear up.
