FORT MYERS, Fla. — The City of Fort Myers has officially renamed part of a road after a police officer who was killed in the line of duty.

Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller was shot while responding to an incident off Flint Drive near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on October 21, 2018. He was taken to the hospital and died from his injuries on October 28, 2018.

The city has officially renamed Flint Drive the Honorary Adam Jobbers-Miller away.

Kevin Anderson, mayor of Fort Myers attended.

“Any time an officer loses their life in the line of duty you have to view them as a hero. I said to the officers here today honoring Adam, I said, ‘America’s lost sense of what true heroes are. Wanna see true heroes? Look around — you are the true heroes like Adam.’”

Today the Fort Myers Police Department (FMPD) remembered the fifth anniversary of his death by holding a ceremony and then marching down Flint Drive to the exact spot where Jobbers-Miller was shot. They joined in prayer and then held a moment of silence at 5:14 p.m.

Jobbers-Miller took his last breath at 5:14 p.m. on October 28, 2018.

The prayer and moment of silence at the time of his death is a tradition, FMPD has done this every year since he passed away.

“He’s a very special person, you know, he was a public servant and he literally made the ultimate sacrifice. He lost his life, how much more can you ask from a person,” Lieutenant Roger Valdivia said.

Valdivia said it’s not easy to rename a street and FMPD is thankful to the mayor and city council for making this happen.

“It will forever engrave his name and the dedication to selflessness that he did for this community,” said Valdivia. “This has always been a wish of the family.”

He said that every time someone drives down this street they’ll remember Jobbers-Miller’s sacrifice, or if they don’t know him, maybe they’ll Google him and see what he did for his community.

The last time the city did this was for Officer Andrew Widman, who was killed in the line of duty in July of 2008, almost 10 years to the day before Jobbers-Miller. Fort Myers Police headquarters now faces Widman Way.
