Between July 1 and 3, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says a man used the sliding screen doors at a Stateline, Nevada, hotel on Elks Point Road to gain access to guest rooms. Once inside, the man approached sleeping women in their beds, the sheriff’s office says. “Each female awoke from their sleep as the subject was rubbing their feet,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a statement. “Once awake the females confronted the male subject and he fled the scene.”

On Tuesday, law enforcement announced they have made an arrest in the case. Mark Anthony Gonzales, 26, of Atwater, is accused of two counts of burglary and two counts of battery.

According to sheriff’s investigators, a link was made to Gonzales via forensic evidence, and upon speaking to detectives in Atwater, the investigators reportedly learned he “was the suspect of numerous crimes, including the theft of women’s shoes, trespassing, and sexual self-gratification during some of these incidents. It appeared to DCSO Investigators that Gonzales’ crimes were escalating in nature.”

Gonzales is currently being held at the John Latorraca Correctional Center in Merced County, and Douglas County officials say he will be transported on a fugitive warrant to Nevada.

“I am extremely pleased that my Investigators were able to identify, locate, and arrest this individual,” Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley said in a statement. “These types of crimes are especially alarming to a community, and being able to make an arrest allows the victims and community to feel safe again.”
