FORT MYERS, Fla. — Fort Myers Police now have a new Chief! Jason Fields was sworn in Wednesday.

Every seat was filled in the ceremony, with only standing room left for those who came to watch Fields get sworn in.

“First thing I am going to do is take a deep breath and hit the ground running,” Fields said.

Back on July 17, Fields was reluctantly recommended by city manager Marty Lawing. Six of the seven members of the city council approved.

“Chief Fields brings a lot of professionalism and brings a lot to the table, including over 20 years to the department,” Lawing said.

Lawing initially recommended Reo Hatfield from Virginia Beach. But the city council said no.

“We took the time, we were very thoughtful, it was a great selection process regardless of what everyone says,” City Mayor Kevin Anderson said.

He remembers hiring Fields more than 20 years ago.

“I knew he was a good candidate and I know that he is a good candidate for a police chief,” Anderson said.

Fields said he already has a couple of things on the top of his to-do list.

“Combating crime, specifically violent crime and traffic — we have too many people that are driving recklessly,” Fields said.

He will now lead a department with hundreds of employees.

“I want to make an environment at the police department where everyone wants to come to work because in order to take care of others we have to take care of ourselves,” he said.
