FORT MYERS, Fla. — When you go into a place like Whole Foods to shop, usually you grab your cash or card to pay for your groceries, but now you have the option to pay with your palm.

“I think it speeds things up a lot; you don’t have to have a phone or a card, just you,” said Joe Mefford, who has been shopping at Whole Foods and Amazon for years. He said he loves the new tech.

“I do; makes it much easier,” Mefford agreed.

You can pre-enroll online with your credit or debit card, amazon account and phone number.

Then you head into Whole Foods and scan your palms over an Amazon One device.

Florida Gulf Coast University’s Fernando Gonzalez explained it’s like using your fingerprint but more advanced.

“It’s a biometric feature, so it’s a lot like the fingerprints we’ve used in the past, except it’s using the whole palm, and it’s going a little deeper into the skin and getting the veins,” Gonzalez explained.

But not everyone thinks being able to pay with your palm is a good idea.

“I think it’s a little too high tech for me, a little crazy,” said Sandy Beach, who thinks this technology doesn’t seem safe.

“I don’t even do face ID on my phone because I don’t like all the cyber technology; it’s too far out,” explained Beach.

Amazon said someone can’t steal your identity since each palm signature is unique.

There are other ways Beach could trust similar systems, like using her palm to scan for medical records.

Beach said, “I don’t want to pay with my palm, but I might use some demographics for a medical id card.”

So how ethical is this new technology? Well, FGCU’s Chrissann Ruehle said it’s convenient, but there are some dangers with it.

“A lot of companies in recent years have been hacked, so if a hacker gets in and they access your private information, your palm could be associated with that,” Ruehle added.

By the end of the year, all whole foods in the United States should have the option of paying with your palm.
