The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating after deputies in Wayne County shot and killed a man Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office. 

The man had a shotgun raised and ignored the deputies’ commands before the shooting, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. 

Just after 3 p.m., the county said it received a 911 call about a man with a shotgun at 219 Capps Bridge Road in Princeton, a residential area just off Highway 70.

Deputies found the armed man, but he refused to comply with their commands, the count said. Deputies shot the man after he raised the shotgun, according to the county. 

The man was pronounced dead at the scene after the shooting, according to Wayne County. Officials did not identify the man. 

The county said the deputies involved are on administrative leave while the SBI investigates, which is standard procedure when deputies or police officers are involved in a shooting.
