BOONE, N.C. — A business open for decades still brings in both locals and tourists from all over the world.
Famous Louise’s Rock House Restaurant is located in three counties, making it a unique experience aside from the food.
Over 40 years ago, Shirley Yager opened the door of Famous Louise’s with her mother.
“We have been cooking since I was 9,” Yager said.
The duo did everything together. They hung pictures of family and made it a special spot.
“Once you have been in here more than once, you’re family,” Yager said.
Recently, Yager considered selling the business when her mother got sick.
The love from the community is keeping it open, she says, and that’s why she continues to make her special meals. Their pot roast brings in a crowd, as well as their special of the day. And everything is made from scratch, even the desserts.
“Strawberry rhubarb, apple, blackberry and forest fruit pies,” Yager said.
Their signature is rhubarb pie, which has a story of its own behind it.
The pie is made with rhubarbs that Yager grows herself from a plant that belonged to her great-grandfather.
Built in 1936, the building that houses the restaurant was also added to the National Register of Historic Places and sits on a corner of three counties.
“Avery, Burke and McDowell,” Yager said.
Signs are hanging inside the restaurant to tell you which county you are sitting in. It’s an experience and a meal, Yager says, all in one.
