Catastrophe was averted after an aircraft violated President Joe Biden’s airspace near Lake Tahoe on Friday morning. 

A temporary flight restriction has been enacted in the airspace above where Biden and his family are vacationing this week. But according to a press release from the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), a civilian aircraft had to be escorted out of the restricted airspace at about 7:50 a.m. Friday by two F-16 fighter aircraft. A Coast Guard helicopter also assisted in the operation.

According to NORAD, the F-16s had to fire flares to get the civilian pilot’s attention before escorting the violating plane out of the restricted area. The agency said the flares burn out quickly without causing any danger to anyone on the ground. 

No information was given about the pilot, who apparently left the airspace without incident once contacted by the fighter aircraft. 

White House principal deputy press secretary Olivia Dalton said there was no impact on the president, according to the Associated Press.

While on vacation, Biden has been staying at the Tahoe home of billionaire Tom Steyer, a former rival Democratic presidential candidate. Originally expected to be in the Tahoe area for a week, the president and first lady Jill Biden paused their vacation to fly to Maui following the Hawaii wildfires.
