AOC, socialists propose raising taxes for households making more than $250K

First they came for the top 1%. Now they’re aiming for the next 4% down.

How long before socialists like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez come for you?

The congresswoman and her fellow far-lefties are now demanding new tax hikes on not just the top 1%, but the top 5% of New York earners — meaning tax filers making as little as $250,000 a year, as the Empire Center’s Tim Hoefer notes in the Wall Street Journal.

For couples, that’s a mere $127,000 each — roping in, for starters, more than 168,000 New York state and local government employees, including many school staffers, police and fire officials.

The top rate would be an off-the-charts 24%, nearly double California’s 13.3% figure, the next-highest.

The radicals want the hikes in lieu of budget cuts that Mayor Eric Adams says are needed to free up money for migrants.

“The vast majority of us have felt the strain of rising prices from the grocery aisle to the housing market,” reads a statement from AOC and other socialists — ignoring the fact that it was trillions in government spending they supported that fueled those price hikes. “It’s past time [the richest New Yorkers] pay their fair share.”

Hello? In New York, the top 5% already pay 64% of the state’s income taxes.

That’s not at least their fair share?

No, as Hoefer notes, the lefties will never be happy no matter how much tax revenue government rakes in.

So never mind that New York’s state and local tax burden is already the highest in America.

Never mind that Gov. Kathy Hochul slapped New Yorkers with a $1.1 billion tax hike just this year — and that was only two years after another $4 billion hike.

Never mind that New York spends more per student on schools than any state (and with mediocre results). And more on Medicaid than Texas and Florida combined.

Or that the state pays top dollar for public improvement projects and offers government workers top salaries and perks.

(We’ve got the nation’s highest-paid legislature, too.)

Meanwhile, ever-skyrocketing taxes fail to bring in the revenue of AOC & Co.’s dreams — because many New Yorkers simply move rather than have more of their earnings swiped.

(Especially now that working from home has become commonplace.)

It’s a lose-lose formula, but La-La-Land socialists like AOC never worry about reality.

Meanwhile, in deep-blue New York, when the radicals call for tax hikes on the top 1%, many of the other 99% figure why not — it won’t affect them.

In fact, it does, by slowing the overall economy.

More important: To get the cash they want, the socialists will end up coming for everyone.
