Polls open at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday for local elections in North Carolina. Voters in Mooresville will narrow down their choices for at-large commissioner ahead of the Nov. 7 election.

What You Need To Know

  •  Polls will be open for local primaries from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday
  •  Voters in Mooresville will cast ballots to narrow the field of candidates for a race on the town commission ahead of the Nov. 7 General Election
  •  Statesville does not have a primary. Instead voters will pick their next three city council members Tuesday
  •  Voters will be required to show photo ID to cast a ballot this fall

Statesville voters will pick their next city council members for wards 1, 4 and 6. Statesville does not have a primary election.

The 2023 elections are the first to require voter ID after a decision by the North Carolina Supreme Court earlier this year.

In the Town of Mooresville, six candidates are vying for one open at-large seat on the town commission. Voters will pick the top two candidates to face off in the General Election.

Wards 1 and 2 are also up for election this year, but the Ward 1 incumbent is running unopposed. Will Aven is challenging Ward 2 incumbent Commissioner Thurman Houston for that seat in the Nov. 7 election.

In Statesville, incumbents are running for reelection for all three seats on the commission.

Kevin Sullivan is challenging Ward 1 Commissioner David Jones. In Ward 4, Jennifer DiFiore is running against incumbent Amy Lawton. And in Ward 6, Jonathan Mayes and Lisa Pearson are challenging Commissioner Frederick Foster.

Voter ID

North Carolina voters will be required to show photo identification to cast a ballot this fall. The North Carolina Supreme Court overturned its own decision earlier this year to require voter ID.

Most voters will be able to show their driver’s license. The address does not have to match the voter registration address.

People without a photo ID can get one for free from the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles

County election boards are also giving free photo IDs to people who need them

There are exceptions for people who don’t have ID, including lack of transportation, disability or illness, not having the documents needed to get an ID or for a lost or stolen ID.

People without an ID will have to cast a provisional ballot that will be reviewed by the county elections board.

For those voting by mail, people will have to include a copy of their photo ID when they send in their ballot.
