LEE COUNTY, Fla. — A Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) K-9 named “Ace” has died following a battle with an aggressive and terminal form of cancer.

Ace was a part of LCSO’s Corrections Bureau since 2016 and conducted more than 1,400 narcotic searches, according to the LCSO Animal Cruelty Task Force.

Some of these searches happened in correctional facilities and Ace was credited with finding four pounds of methamphetamine inside an inmate’s mail.

He was brought to a veterinarian emergency room after growing ill over the past few days, LCSO said. Veterinarians found large masses and an inoperable aggressive form of cancer during a scan.

Ace died on Tuesday, May 23 with his handler by his side.
