Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are on better terms with their “Full House” co-stars after the siblings decided not to return to Netflix’s “Fuller House.”
The spinoff often cracked jokes about the Olsen twins, 37, and most of the cast implied they weren’t as close with them since the original show air wrapped. They ultimately retired from acting and founded The Row in 2006 and Elizabeth and James in 2007.
However, John Stamos is now revealing that the Olsens spent time with the cast following the death of their TV patriarch Bob Saget, who passed away at age 65 in January 2022.
“I love them dearly and they’ve done so well. I’m so proud of them. When Bob passed away they came. And they were so kind,” Stamos, 60, said during a “Live with Kelly and Mark” appearance on Monday, while promoting his new book, “If You Would Have Told Me: A Memoir.”
“You know, they were here and we were there. And we just weren’t so close over the years because of distance and they said all the things we wanted to hear. They said, ‘We loved our childhood, we love you guys. Thank you for those beautiful eight years,’” he continued. “It was really something that the rest of us needed to hear. It was really nice.”
In Stamos’ book, he did joke once more about how he tried to get Mary-Kate and Ashley fired when they were toddlers on set.
“The truth is it was like for an hour. They were crying through every scene … and I said get me some other kids,” he told Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos. “And they brought these other two kids that were semi-attractive at best. And I was like, ‘Get the Olsens back, quick!’”
He added that it was a “safe” set for the Olsens, “except for Bob and the dirty words” he often cracked.
In May, Stamos revealed he was initially “angry” with the women for not returning to the reboot to reprise their role as Michelle Tanner.
“[Bob] was very instrumental in keeping us all together,” Stamos began during an appearance on “Glee” stars Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz’s podcast, “And That’s What You REALLY Missed.”
“The twins moved to New York… And I gotta tell you, one of the only good thing to come out of Bob’s, well … Mary-Kate and Ashley, we didn’t really see them much,” he continued. “I mean, we stayed in touch a little bit but Bob really did. And they were so great… You hear rumors, ‘Oh, they hated their childhood or they hated being on the show or whatever.’”
He added: “When I did Fuller House they didn’t wanna come back. And I was angry for a minute. And that got out.”
“Full House” also starred Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, David Coulier, Andrea Barber and Lori Loughlin.
Stamos’ “If You Would Have Told Me: A Memoir” hits bookshelves on Tuesday.
