CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A crash involving a Cape Coral Police Department cruiser on Thursday evening is part of a larger drug enforcement operation.

The police cruiser somehow crashed into a blue Lamborghini SUV on El Dorado Parkway East near Malibu Court. The side of the suspect’s SUV was smashed in while the front of the police cruiser was damaged and the airbags were deployed.

According to law enforcement officials on the scene, this was part of a much larger narcotics operation known as the NETFORCE Task Force. The task force focuses on getting drugs off the streets and is a collaborative effort.

Involved in Thursday’s operation were the Cape Coral Police Department, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, State Attorney’s Office, and Homeland Security.

It’s unclear what led up to the crash, but law enforcement agents at the scene said there was not a chase.

Lee Anne Ledoyen heard the crash that ended in a yard adjacent to her home.

“I was feeding the pups, and I heard a loud crash. Ran outside, and I saw a blue car,” she said. “Hearing them screaming at them, ‘We’re going to let the dog loose if you don’t.’ I mean, shields, guns drawn and were yelling at the boys in the car.”

In total, Ledoyen said that she saw three different young men being escorted away in handcuffs.

Law enforcement on the scene confirmed only that “several people were detained.” They wouldn’t share whether or not drugs were found inside the suspect vehicle

“I saw large garbage bags, and everybody’s very suspicious,” said Ellen Richards. “To have over 15 law enforcement cars show up in less than two minutes, something was going on.”

“We were supposed to go out tonight for dinner, but I was like, ‘Oh no. I got the best show right here across the street,’” added Ledoyen.

ABC7 inquired about the condition of the officer involved in the crash as well as if any arrests were made. The Cape Coral Police Department has not yet responded to our request.
