Stone Ridge field hockey scores in second overtime to repeat as ISL champs

Hallie Slidell had to leave the field after she was tripped and her stick hit her head during the first overtime of Sunday’s Independent School League field hockey tournament title game.

The Stone Ridge senior returned to the pitch at the start of the second overtime and scored the decisive goal three minutes later, weaving through multiple defenders and unleashing a backhand shot.

Before she could turn around and celebrate on her own, her six teammates on the field brought her to the ground; more rushed off the bench to join the dogpile. The Gators overcame an early deficit to defeat Holy Child, 2-1, and repeat as ISL tournament champions in McLean.

“I didn’t want my last game to be on the sidelines,” said Slidell, a Davidson commit. “You get injured and the first five or 10 seconds, maybe a minute, you’re like, ‘Oh, my gosh, I can’t go back in; I just want to lie on the ground.’ But then it starts hitting you that, ‘No, I want to be in. I want to be there for my team. I want to get this win.’ ”

Freshman Josie Molinari opened the scoring for Holy Child (11-6) in the first quarter via a deflection off a defender and put Stone Ridge in an unusual position — down a goal against a conference opponent.

The top-seeded Gators (16-2) had given up just 10 goals in 17 games this season, only four of which came against ISL opponents, and shut out the Tigers in a 2-0 regular season win.

The Gators changed their formation, pressed higher up the field and were constantly on the attack after the Tigers’ opening goal. Stone Ridge outshot Holy Child 5-2 in the opening half and earned multiple penalty corners but was stymied by Tigers goalie Kate Cox. The sophomore made four first-half saves to keep Holy Child ahead at halftime; she finished the game with 12.

Stone Ridge Coach Gloria Nantulya said the Gators’ depth often prevails in important moments. Just last year, a goal from a freshman gave Stone Ridge the ISL tournament championship.

In this season’s title game, the Gators’ senior captains lifted Stone Ridge to the program’s first double of regular season and tournament titles.

Kat Carr shoveled a rebound into the back of the net to equalize in the third quarter, and Slidell found a way through Holy Child’s pesky defense for the golden goal that let Stone Ridge complete its objective.

“We knew we had to step up and do what we needed to do to get our team to this point,” said Carr, a Notre Dame lacrosse commit. “That’s exactly what we did.”
