LONG BEACH, Calif. – A man accused of stabbing his own mother has died Monday after he was shot by police in Long Beach, officials said. The suspect’s mother was taken to the hospital.

The shooting happened before 9 a.m. Long Beach Police officers were called out to a home in the 300 block of 69th Way for reports that a man had stabbed his mother. When officers got there, they found the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Eriberto Penaloza, holding a knife.

When officers asked him to drop the knife, police said he didn’t and “raised the knife while advancing toward the officer.” That’s when officers shot him.

Paramedics transported Penaloza and the stabbing victim to the hospital. Officials said the woman had been stabbed before officers arrived, and that Penaloza also had stab wounds on his upper body.

A shooting involving Long Beach officers has been reported in the 300 block of 69th Way. 

Penaloza, the woman’s son, later died from his injuries. Officials said the suspect’s mom’s injuries were not life-threatening.

The Long Beach Police Department is now reviewing body camera footage from the incident, and will conduct an investigation into whether the shooting was justified, as part of department policy.
