Krispy Kreme is celebrating National Doughnut Day this Friday by giving away free doughnuts. On June 2, customers can pick up a free single doughnut of their choosing with no other purchase necessary.
The international chain is also running a promotion on Friday where customers who buy any dozen doughnuts can receive another dozen of Krispy Kreme’s Original Glazed doughnuts for $2.
National Doughnut Day may sound like a made-up holiday, but it actually dates all the way back to 1938. The holiday was first created as a fundraiser by Chicago’s Salvation Army in honor of the group’s “Donut Lassies.” The Lassies were women who were sent to France during World War I to supply the Army with essential supplies and fresh doughnuts, which were said to have massively boosted morale.
While there is no longer a Krispy Kreme in San Francisco, all Bay Area locations are participating in the National Doughnut Day festivities. Find your free doughnut fix at stores in Daly City, Concord, Union City, Fremont, Brentwood, Mountain View, Santa Clara, Vacaville, San Jose and Rohnert Park.
Another international chain is also running a promotion for National Doughnut Day: Dunkin’ Donuts. However, you’ll have to purchase a beverage to receive your free doughnut at Dunkin’, which has locations in South San Francisco, Oakland, Walnut Creek, San Carlos, Sunnyvale, Redwood City and more.
