CAPE CORAL, Fla. — The list of people who want to replace Cape Coral Councilwoman Patty Cummings is growing. She is accused of lying about where she lived when she ran for office.

Now, the council must appoint someone to fill her District 4 seat after the governor removed her from office.

So far, five people are vying for the seat as Cummings faces felony charges following her booking and release from jail.

The candidates are throwing their names into a hat in hopes of being picked to replace her.

Richard Carr is a retired law enforcement officer who previously worked for the city.  He said he would offer a simple solution to have a seamless transition moving forward.

But would he run for the seat?

“I would be interested in the next election cycle,” Carr said.

Anthony Rainone also lives in District 4 and said that election integrity is something that is part of the national conversation from Washington D.C. to city hall.

He’s a former government and economics teacher and said he would absolutely run for the seat, although he’s never run for public office.

Bob Sutter has military and management experience and believes that qualifies him for the position.

“I would like to have a firm understanding of the future growth of the community. I want to run either way,” Sutter said.

Janine Mohl also applied for the open seat and is a former H.R. director and believes her experience would have her listening to people.

“I really feel like the district needs representation of people who live here,” Mohl said.

But when asked if she would run for the seat, she said probably not.

“I really can’t see myself doing that,” she responded, saying she would be better suited to temporarily hold the seat.

Finally, Karen Solgard is a loan officer who volunteers with her son at the Cape Coral Kiwanis Thrift Store.

“How do we keep developing the city in a prosperous way and also find housing that is affordable for the workforce,” Solgard said would be her platform.

She’s uncertain about running for office if she gets the appointment.

“I’ll leave that up to the future,” she said.

Candidates still have until December 1 to throw their hat in the ring. Council plans to replace Cummings during its December 13 meeting.

The person appointed will hold the seat until next November when someone is elected.
