CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Florida has a new golf cart law that just started in October, saying you need to be 18 or have a valid driver’s license to drive a golf cart on public roads.
Jessica Kitchen from Matt’s Custom Golf Carts said those new laws are a response to accidents involving kids, just like the one in Cape Coral that happened on Wednesday.
A neighbor told us the girls involved in a golf cart crash along Southwest 6th Avenue were around 11 to 12 years old.
If your golf cart has a high and low feature, it’s safer to put it in low, which maxes out at 13 miles per hour.
“I think if you’re in the low gear it would be less of an impact if a kid was driving or even if an adult was driving,” Kitchen said.
Witnesses say the two girls were pinned under the golf cart.
Neighbors ran over and lifted the golf cart off them, possibly saving their lives.
“Just make sure you’re wearing a seatbelt for sure. I always demonstrate how the seatbelt works,” Kitchen said.
Police are still investigating what led to the crash.
