Firefighters may be called upon, from time to time, to rescue wayward cats. And it’s not always from the tops of tall trees. One unfortunate kitten found itself at the bottom of a 40-foot well near Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Luckily for this curious kitten, the firefighters from Winston-Salem Fire Department Engine 15 and Forsyth County deputies were on the case.

Photos shared by the sheriff’s office show the kitten at the bottom of a narrow well. Deputies and firefighters managed to lower down a bucket on a rope and coax the kitty into taking the ride back up to the surface.

First responders took the kitten, looking a little wet, dirty and disgruntled, to the Forsyth County Animal Shelter, the sheriff’s office said.
