CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — He survived four concentration camps, lost all his family members in the Holocaust and has defeated cancer and several strokes.

Saul Dreier’s story is a remarkable one, that continues to be written to this day.

Dreier, the founder of the Holocaust Survivor Band, recently performed at UNC Chapel Hill.

He formed the band 10 years ago in his home state of Florida.

“Mostly the children and grandchildren of the survivors, they play with me,” Dreier said.

His love for music started at an early age, and continued into the horrors of the Holocaust where he played music with wooden spoons.

“How I stood alive, I don’t know, I’ve got no answer. God, my people, my children, my family, I don’t know but I feel good. I’m praying. I’m going to be 99 years old in a couple months,” Dreier said.

This Hanukkah, Dreier will keep hitting those drums, but this time it will be in front of President Joe Biden.

Dreier has been invited to perform at the White House in December as part of a Hanukkah celebration. Dreier will also be honored during the event.
