The Center for Disease Control (CDC) issued a food safety alert Thursday regarding an increased outbreak of salmonella cases linked to cantaloupes.

As of Thursday, Nov. 30, the CDC is advising everyone to avoid eating unknown brands of pre-cut cantaloupes.

Several cantaloupe brands recalled their products:

Since Nov. 24, 18 more people in two new states were reportedly infected with the strain, bringing the total cases to 117 across 34 states.

WHAT TO DO NOW

• Do not eat pre-cut cantaloupes if you don’t know whether Malichita or Rudy brand cantaloupes were used, including chunks and fruit mixes at restaurants and grocery stores

• Do not eat any recalled whole or pre-cut cantaloupe products

• If the whole cantaloupe does not have a sticker, check with the store to make sure it is not a Malichita or Rudy brand cantaloupe
• Wash items and surfaces

• Fever higher than 102°F 

• Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving or bloody diarrhea 

• So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down 

According to the CDC, symptoms usually start 6 hours to 6 days after swallowing.

Most people recover without treatment after 4 to 7 days. 

However, some people may experience more severe illnesses that require medical treatment or hospitalization.
