The Abbotsford International Airshow took off Friday and will continue throughout the weekend, featuring aerial performances, aircraft displays, food trucks, and beer tents.

Fans will be treated to shows by the Canadian Forces Skyhawks, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, the USAF Globemaster II, and others.

Last year, the airshow brought in about 60,000 people, creating traffic backlogs and delays along nearby roadways.

1130 NewsRadio Traffic Centre’s Alex Carrigan says traffic this year is expected to be even heavier and riskier.

“It’s a whole lot of traffic coming at it from Highway 1, Fraser Highway, and Huntington Road as well, Saturday, Sunday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” Carrigan said.

“Then in that early evening, around 5 p.m., traffic’s going to be coming westbound back on Highway 1.”

The City of Abbotsford issued a traffic warning to drivers in the area, saying attendees to the airshow are encouraged to carpool with friends and use public transit if possible. As well, a free BC Transit shuttle between Route 66 Fraser Valley Express and the airshow, with stops at Bourquin Exchange, Old Yale Road at Clearbrook, Maclure Road at Townline, and Highstreet Shopping Centre. Shuttles start running at 9:40 a.m.

The City of Abbotsford has directed drivers to listen to 1130 NewsRadio traffic reports for the most up-to-date information.

The event runs through to Sunday.
