Emmy Award-winning actor Andre Braugher’s cause of death has been revealed just days after his death on Dec. 11 at age 61.

Braugher died from lung cancer after he was diagnosed with the disease earlier this year, his publicist Jennifer Allen said Thursday. At the time of his death on Monday, Allen said Braugher died after a brief illness.

Braugher, who was born in Chicago, was best known for his acting roles as Captain Raymond Holt in NBC’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” and Detective Frank Pembleton in NBC’s “Homicide: Life on the Street,” the latter of which he won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series in 1998. Braugher won a second Emmy in 2006 for Outstanding Lead Actor in A Miniseries Or A Movie for his role as Nick Atwater in FX Network’s “Thief.”

NBC Entertainment issued a statement Tuesday remembering Braugher as “the actor that other actors in the profession would always aspire to be.”

“In addition to his prowess as a dramatic actor, his comedy chops were also on full display as the determined and passionate Capt. Holt in ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” NBC Entertainment said in a tweet. “We will miss him tremendously.”
