There’s a bit of a story behind the glorious Iris van Herpen ensemble worn by Ali Wong to the Screen Actors Guild Awards recently: It was originally planned, her stylist Tara Swennen told Vogue, for the Golden Globes earlier this season — but, due to a 6-foot wingspan, she needed a red carpet with more room.
The dress, with its separate wings, was the closing look from van Herpen’s fall 2023 couture show, and was so large Wong had to arrive in a van. And yes, she had to shed the wings before sitting down at a table, and likely forgo any hugging on the red carpet (which was, for some reason, gray), but what an effect: She looks like she’s standing in a glittering waterfall made up of lacy diamonds; it’s clothing as magic.
