Another N.C. man charged with assaulting police on Jan. 6

Police arrested a man from Mint Hill, North Carolina, in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. Federal prosecutors charged David Paul Daniel, 36, with assaulting police during the attack. Mint Hill is a suburban town just outside Charlotte.

More than 1,200 people have been arrested in connection to the Jan. 6 attack, including more than 400 accused of assaulting police. Thousands of Trump supporters attacked the Capitol building that day as Congress met to certify the election of Joe Biden.

More than two dozen people from North Carolina have been charged with being involved in the attack, including several accused of assaulting police.

Federal investigators say Daniel was part of a group that broke through the Senate Wing Door into the Capitol.

“At approximately 2:46 p.m., Daniel joined another rioter in leading a violent push against the barricaded Senate Wing Door and the police officers attempting to hold them closed,” prosecutors said.

The group forced their way through the door, court records say. Daniel was sprayed by a “chemical irritant” minutes later and left the building through a broken window, prosecutors said.

He again went back in the Capitol for another five minutes before leaving out the broken window again at 3:04 p.m., prosecutors said.

Federal prosecutors in Washington D.C. has secured hundreds of guilty pleas and convictions of people who were involved in the Jan. 6 attack. Those charged with assaulting police have received sentences that include years in federal prison.

Daniels has been charged with two felonies: assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers and civil disorder. He also faces misdemeanor charges:

  • Entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority
  • Disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds
  • Engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds
  • Disorderly conduct in a Capitol building
  • Willfully and knowingly engaging in an act of physical violence in the grounds or any of the Capitol buildings
  • Parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building.
