BABCOCK RANCH, Fla. — A Fort Myers civil rights attorney is planning to sue Babcock High School and possibly even parents whose children racially harassed Black students.

This news comes as another parent steps forward, claiming her daughter has endured mental torture at the school.

The administration at Babcock Ranch appears to be taking the claims much more seriously. The school sent out a letter informing parents they plan to create a “civility task force” to teach people to be more civil to one another after Kali Piontek said her some students downloaded an app that replicated the sound of a crack whip and used it to taunt her daughter while calling her the n-word.

Piontek said her 16-year-old daughter was forced to listen to the whip as she was called names by some classmates.

“They said she was a ‘monkey’ who belonged in a tree and pressed her on why she wasn’t with her slave owners,” Piontek said.

The comments are similar to those endured by classmate Grace Clay who said students called her a “cotton picker”, “blackie” and a “favorite slave”.

She said some of her volleyball teammates posted a video online showing them harassing her. The players could be heard saying, “She didn’t pick her cotton this morning,” and the word “racism” while shouting, “Get the black one,” while laughing and hitting her with pillows. Clay said the girls prevented her from getting out of a hotel room they were staying in during an away game.

Piontek went on to say another student used his phone to mimic gunshots in the classroom.

“He proceeded to call my daughter the n-word,” Piontek said.

ABC7 also obtained photos posted online of students playing hangman in class using the n-word.

Piontek said she hopes her daughter knows that she is not the person some classmates tell her she is.

ABC7 also obtained a student log that detailed harassment by classmates who said they were called “monkeys” and another student declared he hates gay people.

The school said in a letter to parents, “We cannot avoid issues that show a lack of understanding.”

In a second letter, the school informed parents it plans to establish a “civility task force” to promote inclusivity and respect.

Attorney Joe North said he wants to correct all of the wrongs going on at the school.

North confirmed he now represents Clay’s family and plans to file a lawsuit against the school for civil rights violations.

“And we’re looking at suing not just the school, but the parents of the students who committed these acts,” Attorney North stated.

Meanwhile, parents whose children are victims of the abuse say they want it to end.

“It’s hurtful. It makes me feel like a failure! It’s my child. It’s my job to protect them,” Piontek concluded.

Attorney North said any parent whose child was harassed at Babcock Ranch school can contact his office.

He plans to file the lawsuit as early as next week.
