A Palatine resident who owned a bridal shop in Arlington Heights is facing theft charges after being accused of accepting more than $2,000 for payment of a bridal gown but closing up shop and not delivering it, according to an Arlington Heights Police Department news release.
Monique Pruitt, 43, of the first block of Plum Grove Road in Palatine, was charged Friday with felony theft by deception.
According to the release, the Arlington Heights Police Department initiated a deceptive practice investigation after getting a complaint that Ava Nicole Bridal Shop — also listed as Ava Nicole Bridal Suite — previously located at 19 E. Miner Street in Arlington Heights, failed to deliver a wedding gown that had been ordered.
According to the release, the complaint stated Pruitt, then-owner of the bridal shop, accepted a $2,310 payment on March 1 for a custom bridal gown. The dress was to be delivered in time for the wedding that had been scheduled for late-summer.
Instead, it was discovered that Pruitt “vacated her Arlington Heights store and changed telephone numbers,” the release states.
The business owner then allegedly postponed three fitting appointments and “subsequently ceased all communication with the customer. The customer never received her gown or a refund.”
Further investigation revealed that Pruitt’s account with the gown manufacturer had been closed for one year “due to non-payment of invoices.”
Police said Pruitt didn’t cooperate with the investigation.
She appeared in court Saturday for a detention hearing, then again Tuesday at the Rolling Meadows courthouse.
