For most of her high school golf tournaments, Barron Collier junior Brandy Singleton just has to make a short jaunt across the street from her school to Kensington Country Club. Most recently, however, she went a tad further — traveling across the pond to play in Scotland.

“Brandy had a really, really strong finish at the state regionals,” said Bart Singleton, Brandy’s dad and Barron Collier assistant golf coach. “She shot one over 73 to go and had an amazing finish. Had a long birdie putt to finish up. And we got contacted right afterwards.”

Brandy was part of a select few who were chosen to represent the United States in the 2023 Scotland Junior Golf Invitational, playing on some of the top-ranked and most historic courses in the world.

“I got notice from I believe the vice principal,” said Brandy. “He got an email from the directors who were putting it on and then he emailed my dad and he’s like, ‘oh, do you want to go scholar for a golf tournament?’ I’m like, ‘of course! Vacation? Golf too?’”

It wasn’t technically your average golf tournament as one would expect. While there, Brandy and the others played in different types of events, including match play with partners.

“So it was more like ‘USA versus Scotland,’ which was really interesting,” said Brandy. “I didn’t think it would be that way but it was fun.”

Brandy’s mom, Jennifer, made the trip to Scotland with her. They all got to soak up the incredible views and learn about the culture, while they also used the experience for some preparation of playing golf at the next level.

“I think that it was a great motivation,” said Brandy. “The way they set it up was more like a college athlete’s experience. So we stayed in the dorms, we got the dorm food and all that, it was very independent. I want to go play college golf and it was also a good learning curve like this is what I should expect. This is what is going to be going on in college.”

“This one in Scotland was huge,” said Bart Singleton. “I think exactly what came out of it was the motivation and being out there with players that just live golf, you can’t get enough of that.”

The golfers played in the cold, the rain and in crazy winds that got up to 45 miles per hour, so Brandy had to learn how to perfect her golf skills in completely different environments, which she can use to help her excel this season.

“She’s phenomenal,” said Bart. “She’s a great athlete. I think she can do amazing things, she puts in time and effort sometimes which amazes me. We were actually traveling for the last couple of weeks and most days she was up around sunrise out playing at the course. So when she gets her mind set on it, she’s gonna be tough to beat.”

“It was one of the best experiences of my life, probably,” said Brandy. “It’ll forever be a great memory.”
