La Jolla resident Patty Pastore wrote to the La Jolla Light that she went for a walk on Marine Street Beach just before high tide the evening of July 4 and filled a few small bags with trash left by Independence Day beach-goers.

Then she encountered two Barber Tract residents who also were helping clear the beach before high tide to keep cans, bottles and other litter from washing out to the ocean.

If you see something around La Jolla that you find worthy of kudos, send photos for our Polishing the Jewel feature to [email protected]. Or if you find something you think needs some work, send photos for our sister feature, Tarnishing the Jewel.
