The editors at Eater LA dine out several times a week, if not per day, which means we’re always encountering standout dishes that deserve time in the limelight. Here’s the very best of everything the team has eaten this week.

Cheeseburger at Heavy Handed in Studio City

I’m not always craving a smash burger, but when I am, I’m looking for something pretty particular. My requirements include a plush bun (none of that crumbly bread business), crispy, lacey patty edges, and fully melted cheese that clings to the meat. Luckily, Heavy Handed checks all these boxes with its short rib blend burgers. The salty patty is fatty enough to feel indulgent without toeing the line into greasy, while the crisp pickles offer a vinegary counter to the richness. Some burger spots fall short when it comes to their fries, but Heavy Handed is not one of those places. The shoestring fries are fried in beef tallow until crispy, then dusted with a healthy handful of salt. The best way to order is in a combo, which comes with a double cheeseburger, fries, and a drink for under $20. 11838 Ventura Boulevard, Studio City, CA 91604. — Rebecca Roland, associate editor

Porcini tagliatelle at Pasta Sisters in Culver City

On a Friday afternoon, I decided to trek up and down the Culver City stairs. For the uninitiated, a group of wide 282 stairs lining Ballona Creek in Culver City can exhaust the even highly fit, let alone those in average cardio shape. It’s brutal but requires food beforehand. Namely, carbs. I planned to load up at Pasta Sisters inside the Helms complex, then tackle the hike. But upon entering the Italian restaurant and settling into the patio with a heaping pile of mushroom tagliatelle, my plans went awry. The dish was an ideal balance of heavy cream and full of porcinis with chopped parsley. Erykah Badu played from the PA. It was 72 degrees, and other diners smiled while enjoying the vibe. The hike would have to wait for another time. 3280 Helms Avenue, Culver City, CA, 90232. — Mona Holmes, reporter

Cochinita pibil tacos from Céntrico in Downtown Disney

There’s a bevy of Instagram-friendly things to eat inside Disneyland Resort, but I think the best hack is to have something to eat at Downtown Disney before entering the park for the day. Céntrico is a lovely outdoor area that’s part of the Paseo/Tiendita triplex that’s operated by chef Carlos Gaytán, who serves easy, familiar Mexican dishes punched up a level or two. Quesadillas, guacamole, esquites, and quesabirria are terrific options, but I liked the balance of these cochinita pibil tacos, served with a tasty roasted tomato and chile salsa. The generously portioned pork comes right off of Gaytán’s signature dish. I would’ve wanted a squeeze of lime to add a tad more moister, but otherwise, there aren’t better tacos to be found within the Disneyland complex, especially for $21 a plate. 1580 Disneyland Drive, Anaheim, CA 92802. — Matthew Kang, lead editor

Pepperoni and mushroom pizza from the Slice and Pint in Redondo Beach

As a South Bay resident for the past eight years, finding great New York-style pizza in the area has been a challenge. I’ve sorted to making a lot of pizza myself at home, but when the Slice and Pint took over a longtime pizzeria in Redondo Beach, I had to get there as soon as possible. The Slice and Pint in El Segundo was probably my favorite thin-crust New York slice in the South Bay, but getting to that downtown area isn’t always convenient given how far it is from the freeway. This Redondo Beach location is close enough for me to bike to, and the space is very clearly designed to be a sports brewpub. The timing couldn’t be better, with the Dodgers entering the World Series to take on the New York Yankees. This pizza we ordered had a proper pliant crust that carried the ideal balance between sauce, cheese, and toppings. Cupped-up Ezzo pepperoni contrasted with meaty little mushroom slices. The difference with Slice and Pint comes from its almost buttery, fragrant crust that takes better than most New York delivery pizzas. 601 N.
