LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Habitat for Humanity homeowners celebrated paying off their mortgage by tossing their bills into a fire!
At an event this week, they got to throw a copy of their mortgage documents into the flames of a bonfire to mark the milestone and major accomplishment of being mortgage-free.
“It means the whole world to me, honest to God. I was a single mom with three kids, put over there in Harlem Heights… it was a struggle working two jobs,” said Yvonne, a Habitat homeowner in Lee County.
Over the last two years, 52 homeowners in Hendry and Lee counties met their personal goal of paying off their habitat loans in full. Through Habitat’s affordable homeownership program, they offer low-to-no-interest mortgages with monthly payments set at or below 30% of the homeowner’s income. It makes the dream of homeownership possible for a lot of people.
