Burger King Testing Flame-Grilled Chicken Sandwiches and Wraps

Burger King is getting outside its burger comfort zone.

The chain, known mostly for its, well, burgers, is testing brand-new sandwiches and wraps to see if customers may have a taste for something more out of its menu. Starting on June 6, Burger King customers in the Omaha, Nebraska, and Huntsville, Alabama markets will get to taste the new lineup of Flame-Grilled Chicken Sandwiches and Wraps.

According to a spokesperson for the company, hungry patrons will have the chance to try the Classic, Fiery, and Bacon and Swiss Royal Crispy chicken sandwiches made with flame-grilled chicken breast. Guests also have the option to substitute the typical crispy white meat chicken in the Royal Crispy Wraps for a half flame-grilled chicken breast instead for a new twist.

As for the Flame-Grilled Royal Crispy Wraps, they will also be available in several flavors, including Classic, Fiery, Honey Mustard, Philly, Fiery Bacon, and Bacon and Cheddar.

Burger King, like other fast food chains, often tests new products in smaller or select markets to gather data and see if there’s the potential for wider appeal. For example, in 2019, Burger King announced it was testing Impossible Whoppers, made with plant-based Impossible patties. At the time, the new menu item was tested in just 59 restaurants in the St. Louis area, but now, it’s available at participating Burger King locations all over the nation.

However, sometimes those tests don’t equate to national rollouts. In 2021, Burger King announced that it was “the first global quick-service restaurant brand” to test out plant-based nuggets, and served eight-piece orders of Impossible Nuggets for a limited time at locations in Des Moines, Iowa, Boston, Massachusetts, and Miami, Florida.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve teamed up with Impossible to make waves in the industry,” Ellie Doty, Burger King North America’s chief marketing officer, said at the time. “So, it’s only fitting we’re the first global QSR to test the Impossible Nuggets. We’re excited to hear what our guests in the test markets think of this latest innovation.” However, it appeared the markets weren’t in need of one more meat-free alternative.

And in 2022, Burger King tested an everything-seasoned burger bun in Huntsville, Alabama, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, along with an “Everything Menu” that featured an Everything Whopper, an Everything BK Royal Crispy Chicken Sandwich, and an Everything Breakfast Sandwich. But that test didn’t lead to further appeal either, which is why you likely never heard about it before. Though we wouldn’t be mad if they tried this one out again.
