BUTLINGTON, NC. — The Burlington Fire Department recently received the highest possible insurance rating from the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey presented the team with the ISO Class 1 rating at the end of June, moving them from Class 2.

The rating determines how well fire stations perform while preparing for, and putting out, fires.
Less than 1% of fire stations across the nation have the ISO Class 1 rating.
Burlington Fire Department’s Battalion Chief of EMS Daniel Shoffner said the entire team helped earn the score.
“It was a celebration for the entire department, because again, every person within the department contributes to that rating, and it is the fruit of efforts of a lot of hard work across the board,” Shoffner said.
The new score could mean a discount in insurance premiums for business owners and homeowners in the area.
“It’s a great thing for area citizens, residents and business owners to be able to locate in these cities where you have this insurance rating,” Shoffner said.
According to the North Carolina Department of Insurance, Burlington is the 26th North Carolina Fire Department to receive the Class 1 rating in the state.
