A police incident was reported in downtown Vancouver, where people heard gunfire Saturday evening.

A caller informed CityNews around 6 p.m. that five gunshots were heard at the intersection of Robson and Richards Streets.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) said in the release that this was a targeted shooting, that is under investigation.

It says multiple witnesses began calling 9-1-1 around 5:40 p.m. after shots were fired.

“Evidence indicates the shooting was targeted, but at this time there are no known injuries and no arrests have been made,” the release said.

“Additional VPD officers have been deployed to the downtown core, and investigators will work throughout the night to collect evidence from the crime scene.”

Streets have been blocked off with police tapes, and foot traffic is being redirected.

At this time, it is unknown if anyone was injured.

Mayor Ken Sim, who was at the scene, tells CityNews that police is working to get more information.

“There’s a police incident that happened here, it would be irresponsible of to comment right now. It’s still under investigation,” he said.

“It’s an emerging situation. The VPD will come out with a statement and they will give you all the details as they become available for public safety.”

The mayor says it’s small consolation right now, but Vancouver is still a very safe place and is only getting safer.

“We’re a big city, and anyone who thinks that events like this would never happen again — it is,” he said.

“Public safety is a big focus and we’ve allocated a lot of resources to make sure that our police departments are fully funded.”

Sim said he cannot comment on whether anyone was arrested for the incident.

Witnesses, or anyone with information, are asked to contact VPD’s Major Crime Section at 604-717-2541
