The Los Angeles Rams no longer have a problem with Cam Akers, after peddling the disgruntled running back to the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday.

Akers, who was a healthy scratch in Sunday’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers, was moved in an exchange of undisclosed 2026 draft picks, according to numerous reports.

After starting in the season opener and scoring a touchdown, Akers saw his carries be carved into by Kyren Williams. When Williams produced two touchdowns in that win over the Seattle Seahawks, he leapfrogged Akers as the Rams’ top back.

This year marked the second season in as many years that Akers had landed in Rams coach Sean McVay’s doghouse. Akers was held out of games last year, before returning to rush for at least 100 yards in the team’s final three games.

But after the parties had said they had overcome their differences, it was clear that Akers was still a thorn in McVay’s side.

When Akers was told he wouldn’t be allowed to suit up for the 49ers game, he took to social media and wrote: “I’m just as confused as everybody else. I’m blessed though.”

After trying unsuccessfully to trade him last year, Akers was sent to the Vikings, where he’ll be reunited with Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell.

When the Rams won the Super Bowl two years ago, O’Connell was the team’s offensive coordinator.

Alexander Mattison is currently the Vikings’ No. 1 back, but with his uneven production Akers should find himself quickly in the mix. His debut could come as soon as Sunday, when the Vikings host the Los Angeles Chargers.

Minnesota has 69 rushing yards this year, the fewest in the NFL and the fewest through two games by any squad since the Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins in 2019.

Akers is in the final season of his four-year rookie contract worth $6.1 million, with $2.9 million guaranteed. The Rams will save an estimated $452,000 in cap space by shedding Akers.
