Evacuation warnings were issued for some areas in Campo Friday afternoon after a brush fire in Mexico moved toward the U.S. border, officials said.

Cal Fire firefighters were dispatched around 1:45 p.m. to monitor a fire burning in Mexico, southeast of Campo and the international border, Cal Fire Capt. Robert Johnson said.

The blaze quickly burned 50 acres on the other side of the border but had not crossed into the United States, Johnson said. A small spot fire had made it over the border in the early afternoon but was quickly extinguished.

Johnson said the fire’s spread had slowed over the course of the afternoon.

The evacuation warnings affect residents and business owners near Shockey Truck Trail and state Route 94, sheriff’s officials said.

“An evacuation warning means there is impending danger to life and property,” sheriff’s officials said on X, formerly known as Twitter. “You must assume an evacuation order will follow and start gathering important items for family and pets.”

An evacuation center was set up at Mountain Empire High School at 3305 Buckman Springs Road.
