CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A family in Cape Coral got hit with a double whammy of crime right outside their front door.

Someone hit the mailbox belonging to the Maryott’s on SE 34th Terrace, right off of Country Club Boulevard. Then, less than a day later, someone stole the broken remains.

The initial crash happened on a rainy evening last week.

“I hear a loud noise,” Rocio Maryott said.

Chalking it up as the wind and rain, she didn’t pay much attention to the sound. That is until later that evening she walked outside to find what happened.

“I saw the whole mailbox destroyed all over the place,” Maryott said.

It wasn’t just her home that was hit. Next door, their mailbox was in pieces too, along with parts of the car that hit both of the mailboxes.

They called the Cape Coral Police Department to file a report.

“We found a piece of the car, of the bumper, then he flipped it and it had the information of the car,” Maryott said.

Using that information, she said officers narrowed down the vehicle to some sort of Kia sedan.

End of the story, right?

Not so fast.

She left the broken mailbox in the yard to clean up after work the next day.

“Just out of curiosity, I opened it up and all my mail was in there,” she said. “So, the mailman actually got out of the car and put the mail on the ground inside the box.”

She propped the only intact piece of the mailbox up on a lawn chair to make their job easier.

But low and behold, she actually propped it up on display for a crook.

“The next day I came home and the mailbox was gone,” she said. “They left the chair, but took the mailbox.”

Not only did someone hit her mailbox, but now someone is stealing the broken remains.

“This, somebody stopped to take someone’s property,” she said. “So, I was very upset about it.”

“That’s just terrible. That’s terrible,” Denise Racano said. “What’s wrong with people.”

The Maryott’s now have a new mailbox, but no clues as to who hit or stole their first mailbox. Odds are they never will, however, they want their double whammy to be a reminder to keep your eyes on the road — and hands on your own property.
