CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A warning notice greets Anytime Fitness members along Santa Barbara Boulevard following car break-ins a few weeks ago.
Police said the first car break-in happened at P-Fit along the same road, then just five minutes away, a second one happened at the Orangetheory Fitness. They were 30 minutes apart.
“One of the things that I hear from people is that they left their purse here or they put something in the back… I just take everything out of my car,” JoAnna Chenault said. She is a member of Anytime Fitness.
Unfortunately, thieves saw belongings left on the front seat and took it as a welcome sign to steal knives, prescriptions and wallets from inside.
Although this happened a couple of weeks ago, a warning sign now greets members as they walk in.
“It’s been several years since we’ve had anything come up about break-ins in parking lots,” gym owner Yvette Sparks said.
Sparks said she was not surprised. She wants her members to be prepared.
“They know members are running in just in their workout gear and probably are leaving their valuables in their car,” she said.
So she wants to share what Cape Coral police told her.
“They thought it was a group of people coming over from the east coast, from what I remember,” Sparks said.
CCPD said they are still investigating who stole from members at P-Fit and Orangetheory just down the road. They did leave behind broken glass and fingerprints.
“We do have cameras that point outside the windows, not necessarily into the parking lot,” Sparks said.
So far they have not seen any issues.
“We just took it upon ourselves to put up a couple of signs so our members were aware not to leave valuables in their car,” she said.
CCPD wants to remind you to take all of your valuables with you and don’t leave them in your car. If you see anything suspicious, report it.
