CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Residents are coming together to throw a Christmas boat parade after the City of Cape Coral canceled their own.
The City of Cape Coral was scheduled to hold its Holiday Boat-A-Long on Dec. 14. The event was canceled due to unsafe weather conditions.
With no plans of rescheduling, Cape Coral residents decided to take measures into their own hands. Cheryl D’Asti started a Residents-Holiday-Boat-Along event on Facebook here. In just a few days, more than 600 people have responded to it, and more than 75 people have already signed their boats up.
“I did create a discussion board where people can go ahead and put their vessel name and all of the information there so we can get a head count,” said D’Asti.
Captain Ryan Hunt with Walker’s Marine is leading the route. The route is just like a parade ran by the city, starting at the Bimini Basin by Four Freedoms Park and meandering through the canals of Southeast Cape Coral. They expect the parade to last around 2 hours. Cape Coral Police Department’s Marine Unit, Sea Tow and members of the Coast Guard will also be there to keep everyone safe.
“We are going to be using Channel 12 on the Marine VHF. That will be our communication channel,” said Hunt. “Just for updates or if anyone falls behind, they’ll be able to communicate on Channel 12.”
Hunt says boaters should meet at the Bimini Basin around 6:00 PM Saturday. They will embark at 7:00 PM.
