CAPE CORAL, Fla. — The Cape Coral Police Department is investigating after a group of thieves broke into several unlocked cars in two neighborhoods early Monday morning.

Residents who live along the 1600 block of Southeast 8th Avenue said the thieves walked through their Cape neighborhood pulling on car doors to see which ones were unlocked, and it was all caught on camera.

“Scary… all we got on anybody’s cameras were shadows,” said Jonathan Galis.

Galis lives on the same road. Early Monday morning his neighbor knocked on his door telling him his Ring camera caught a group of thieves breaking into two of his cars around 3 a.m.

“Hey crooks! Don’t mess with 8th Ave, we’ve got you on camera,” said Galis.

Galis said he’s not sure if anything valuable is missing yet, but the thieves did steal his wife’s birthday cards.

“Maybe they thought there was money in ‘em… but they did take them 8-10 cards… sorry you didn’t get anything,” said Galis.

Galis called the police and shortly after he realized his neighbors were victims as well.

“The other night around 3 o’clock in the morning they broke into my car — both of my cars, but they didn’t take anything,” Yoni Rivera said. “The door was open and a glove compartment, that’s it.”

The Cape Coral Police Department said this wasn’t the only neighborhood that had car break-ins that morning. They received several calls from another neighborhood on the 4400 block of Southwest 9th Avenue. That’s about six miles away from the first neighborhood.

Police said a social security card was stolen, along with several debit and credit cards in that neighborhood.

Police said they’ve dusted for fingerprints on several vehicles, but they haven’t determined if these break-ins are connected.
