Residents and tourists in the Lake Tahoe region may see light snow showers on Thanksgiving Day, but it’s not promised.
There is about a 20% chance of seeing snow on Thursday before a chilly Thanksgiving night, as a cold front approaches, Colin McKellar, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, told SFGATE.

On Thanksgiving Day, temperatures will be in the upper 40s in the Truckee area and between the 40s and 50s in South Lake Tahoe, with the area around the lake experiencing the warmest temperatures, McKellar said. Areas in higher elevations, including the Lake Tahoe Basin, will be much colder, around the mid-30s to 40 degrees.
Some of the peaks, including Mount Rose, might only reach 30 degrees on Thanksgiving, McKellar said. Most of the greater Lake Tahoe area will be the coldest on Thursday night as winds increase throughout the day through the northeast.
McKellar said the chilly conditions and possibility of snow during this time of year are common and “not anything impressive.”
“We may get some flurries that day but any kind of accumulating snowfall is unlikely at this time,” McKellar said. “I would not be surprised to see a few flakes of snow on the east as that front pushes through and that’s going to be more toward Thursday evening.”

Looking into the next seven to 10 days, it’s also unlikely that much snow will fall in Tahoe, McKellar said.
“For the foreseeable future, it looks pretty dry,” he said. “We’re gonna stay cold.”
Despite the weather, some ski resorts will open this week. Heavenly in South Lake Tahoe will open on Tuesday after postponing its opening last week because of the warmer temperatures and lack of snow, the resort announced on social media.
Northstar in Truckee, which also delayed its opening, will now open on Thursday, the resort announced.

“Stay up to date with the forecast, if you ever travel up there to be prepared for winter weather to occur at any time,” he said.
