PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Charlotte County deputies arrested two 19-year-olds for breaking into a vape shop during Hurricane Idalia. Investigators said the burglars thought they could use the storm in their favor, and even said it was “easy” to loot during hurricanes.

Justin Sullivan is the owner of Serenity Vape off Tamiami Trail near Conway Boulevard in Port Charlotte. On August 30 just as Hurricane Idalia was passing through, his store alarms went off at 3 a.m.

“I thought storm debris, something smashed into my window… but when the cops told me it was not, I was like ‘holy wow’ and then I was like, ‘alright I’ll check the cameras,’” said Sullivan.

The cameras showed a man dressed in all black get out of the car and smash the window. He was wearing a face mask, which he and his accomplice took a picture of themselves wearing on Snapchat.

“I’ve seen a lot of that posting the crimes online and getting caught all the time and I think it’s hilarious they do that!” said Sullivan.

Investigators say the burglar was Seth Whiteaker. The man driving his getaway car was Ryan Domato.

Sullivan said Whiteaker was only in the store for 45 seconds, but the two returned a few minutes later to pick up a flashlight they left behind.

“They’re lucky they didn’t caught right there because the cops were already on their way,” said Sullivan.

At just 19 years old, they’re not even old enough to buy anything from Serenity Vape Shop.

“Maybe that’s why they came in to try to grab some vapes and juice and something like that,” said Sullivan.

Whiteaker was arrested for an unrelated crime about a week after the break-in. Investigators then matched his phone data to the crime. On top of the Snapchat selfies, he took a picture of his bloody hand after smashing the window.

Sullivan said they didn’t get away with anything valuable but it did cost him $800 to replace the door. He thinks they were trying to steal cash from his register, which was empty.
