Chicago Bears end losing streak as DJ Moore explodes for 3 TDs

LANDOVER, Md. — Chicago Bears receiver DJ Moore was only 3 minutes into his postgame news conference Thursday night when his cellphone began buzzing. His fiancee was calling, presumably to catch up and talk a little bit about how his night had gone.

Moore wasn’t about to leave her hanging. So from a lectern in the visitor’s media room at Fed Ex Field, he put a reporter’s question on hold and answered his phone.

“Hey, I’m in media,” he said. “Yeah.”

Then a pause.

“(It’ll be) probably about 5 minutes. Bye.”

To be fair, Moore could have spoken to reporters for another 25 minutes and not run out of things to talk about. Not after the night he had, the eight-catch, 230-yard, three-touchdown explosion that, at long last, brought an end to the Bears’ 14-game losing streak.

Moore and his teammates felt a euphoric combination of relief, satisfaction and excitement after the Bears pounded the Washington Commanders 40-20 on the brightly-lit “Thursday Night Football” stage. And Moore’s message inside a jubilant, music-pumping locker room was direct.

“Just never lose this feeling,” he said. “Let’s just not lose that feeling of what we walked into.”

The message in return from Moore’s teammates? Thanks a million, man. Thanks for the contributions. Thanks for the positive mojo and for propelling a much-needed victory.

Thanks for the three scores and those five receptions for at least 20 yards.

“He showed out tonight,” quarterback Justin Fields said.

Added fellow receiver Darnell Mooney: “DJ had a freakin’ crazy game.”

Thanks for the second-greatest single-game yardage output by a Bears receiver in history. (Only Alshon Jeffery — with 249 yards against the Minnesota Vikings in 2013 — has ever had more.)

“DJ’s doing some special things,” tight end Cole Kmet said.

Fittingly, Moore’s career night was bookended by a pair of catches with major significance. His first grab came on the opening drive, on third-and-9 from the Bears 26-yard line. That’s when Moore put a double move on cornerback Benjamin St-Juste and broke free up the left sideline.

Quarterback Justin Fields couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw Moore facing press man coverage against a single-high safety look. Fields needed solid protection, of course. And he needed to make a good throw. But with the separation Moore created against St-Juste?

“Wide open,” Fields said. “You definitely need time on that for the route to develop. So we had great protection. And of course, he rode off the corner at the top (of the route). That made my job easy.”

It was a big play that provided a big energy surge early, the Bears’ longest gain on a night in which they racked up 451 total yards. It led to a first series touchdown by — who else? — Moore during a first half in which the Bears scored on all five of their possessions to open up a 27-3 lead.

Moore’s final catch was more meaningful, that one for 56 yards and again on third down late in the game. This time, with the Bears clinging to a 30-20 lead with 4:18 remaining, they went away from a conservative approach and trusted Fields and Moore to do their thing.

Fields threw quickly to the left and 5 yards beyond the sticks. But for a breath or two, it looked like Commanders cornerback Kendall Fuller might jump the route.

“I thought it was going to be an interception,” Mooney said. “Crazy catch. Good concentration.”

Added Moore: “Justin put it in a good spot. He threw it out where only I could catch it. And it was off to the races.”

Once the ball was in Moore’s hands, the game was over. Off he went on a sprint down the sideline and into the east end zone at Fed Ex Field for a touchdown that gave the Bears a 17-point lead and seemed to obliterate every last demon from the team’s 347-day stretch without a victory.

Moore had only one thing on his mind.

“Run fast and score,” he said. “Have fun with it. But score.”

Man, did that dash with the ball in his hands feel good. For everybody.

On a night where Fields had his second consecutive outing with four touchdown passes, Moore was the star. Of Fields’ 282 passing yards, 82% of them went to his favorite receiver.

“They left him one-on-one more times than I thought they would tonight,” Fields said. “When you see you always have him one-on-one, you know he’s going to win 95% of the time.”

Oddly, Moore said he was taken aback by how anxious he felt Thursday morning.

“Out-of-this-world nervous,” he said. “I guess that was my body telling me we were about to go off. So I look forward to having some more nervous days (soon).”

Moore’s first touchdown on the opening drive came on third-and-14. He scored again in the second quarter on an 11-yard dart from Fields in the back corner of the end zone with Fuller in tight coverage.

Moore almost had his TD hat trick much earlier when he caught a short hitch route and again broke into the clear for what looked like it would be a 63-yard score in the third quarter. But the officials ruled, controversially, that he had stepped out of bounds at the Commanders 31.

“That really pissed me off,” Moore said. “I was about to score. I could have had four touchdowns.”

That’s exactly the competitive energy the Bears are looking to heighten.

“He uplifts everybody,” coach Matt Eberflus said.

There was so much to love about the Bears’ first victory of the season and the first since Oct. 24, 2022. Against a tenacious defensive front, the offensive line held up well. Thanks to an interception from Greg Stroman Jr. and a forced fumble and recovery from Terell Smith, the Bears also won the turnover battle 2-0.

They withstood the absences of defensive backs Jaylon Johnson and Eddie Jackson — both inactive Thursday night — then weathered an avalanche of in-game injuries that took center Lucas Patrick, running backs Khalil Herbert, Roschon Johnson and Travis Homer, and receiver Equanimeous St. Brown out of action.

There was a toughness needed for the Bears to put the finishing touches on an impressive road victory. That added to the satisfaction.

“That feeling we had after the game is just a feeling where you never want it to end,” Fields said.

Still, it was Moore’s explosive night that ignited the show. His previous career-high for receiving yards in a game was 157 against the Detroit Lions when he was a rookie with the Carolina Panthers in 2018. Thursday’s performance blew that away.

“It was just fun,” Moore said. “Football is fun. We’re out there playing a kid’s game at the end of the day. I just looked at it that way. Tonight, the stars aligned.”
