The 2024 Coachella lineup is here. If you’ve been following along with the rumors, the three main headliners aren’t too surprising — but there is one major act on the bill that almost no one could’ve predicted.

Taking place the middle two weekends of April, Coachella brings thousands of music fans to the middle of the desert in Indio. Last year’s event was plagued by controversy regarding Frank Ocean’s divisive headlining set on the first weekend of the festival (he canceled weekend two, citing a leg injury) and sound difficulties during Bad Bunny’s performance. Meanwhile, Day 2 headliners Blackpink proved that a K-Pop act deserves top billing (the South Korean boy band Ateez makes the lineup this year). 

This year’s headliners are Lana Del Rey, Tyler, the Creator and Doja Cat. These artists have massive followings, but armchair critics perusing the festival poster may scratch their chins at the selections, which don’t seem very exclusive. Lana Del Rey, who headlined Outside Lands in 2023, has a devoted following and critical acclaim, but she lacks the spectacle of a headliner like Beyoncé. Tyler, the Creator is certainly one of the most important producers of the last 15 years, but if you’ve been to a music festival in the last decade you’ve likely already seen him. Doja Cat is also fresh off of a stadium tour. For a festival that is arguably the biggest musical event of the year, none of these acts feels particularly special. (The booking of Tyler, the Creator does raise the question of whether Frank Ocean will return to the desert, as the pair were both original members of the Odd Future collective and have collaborated several times since.)

The act that actually feels the most notable is listed at the bottom of the festival flyer: No Doubt. The seminal southern California ska-punk band fronted by Gwen Stefani did a reunion run of festival shows in 2015, but has been silent ever since. The booking seems like a natural progression after booking Blink-182 to great acclaim last year, and Sublime’s inclusion on this year’s lineup further speaks to the reemergence of ’90s ska-punk nostalgia.

Other big-font acts on the poster include 24-year-old Mexican superstar Peso Pluma, Brit-pop icons Blur and “Prince of Reggaeton” J Balvin. Justice is the closest thing to a true EDM headliner this year, although there are plenty of other trending DJs and producers high on the bill (Peggy Gou, Dom Dolla, Gesaffelstein, DJ Snake). 2023’s rapper of the moment Ice Spice will make an appearance, as well as the current kings of instrumental festival jam sessions, Khruangbin. More notables include emo throwbacks Taking Back Sunday, AI evangelist Grimes, “Daisy Jones & the Six” star Suki Waterhouse and a hologram performance by Hatsune Miku. Sacramento represents with nu-metal favorites Deftones and Victoria Monet, but northern California gets little love otherwise (although you can expect thousands to be singing along to Dom Dolla’s anthemic “San Frandisco”).
