Blood, monsters, demon-nun jump scares in silly sequel.
“The Nun II” — part of the Conjuring universe — is the sequel to “The Nun” (2018) and finds Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) returning to face the titular demon nun. Expect to see creepy images, scary monsters, deaths, blood (including a corpse lying in a huge blood puddle), young girls in peril, characters on fire and neck snapping. Additionally, women are beaten, punched and thrown; a woman is repeatedly beaten with a thurible; a girl is gored by goat horns; and more. There’s also bullying and brief dialogue about racially motivated violence. Language is limited to “b—-,” “Jesus Christ” and “bloody hell,” and there’s some mild flirting. A wine glass is knocked over on a dinner table, there’s a jug of Communion wine and scenes take place in a wine cellar (the casks burst, and wine sprays everywhere). Like the original, this one looks good but is focused less on atmosphere than on jump scares and powering through its (silly) story. (110 minutes)
Marvel’s beloved Baby Groot stars in funny series of shorts.
The second season of “I Am Groot” is a series of animated shorts featuring Baby Groot from the Guardians of the Galaxy universe. Baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) usually ends up in some sort of trouble due to his toddler-like desire to explore and do things his way, providing funny and relatable situations for kids. But there are some suspenseful and mildly violent scenes — explosions, characters getting squished, etc. — that might be scary for the youngest viewers. Marvel fans will enjoy a quick cameo from Rocket (Bradley Cooper). (Five roughly 5-minute episodes)
Available on Disney Plus.
Slow-paced, atmospheric fantasy horror has violence.
“The Changeling” is a fantasy horror series based on the book by Victor LaValle. It stars LaKeith Stanfield (“Haunted Mansion,” “Sorry to Bother You”) as a man on an epic journey to find his missing wife and son. The series is atmospheric and spooky, with violence that includes a death by gun, a hammer attack, the murder of a baby and disturbing supernatural imagery. Characters have sex; they’re nude, but no private parts are shown. Language includes “s—,” “f—” and “goddamn.” Adults are seen drinking alcohol. (Eight roughly 50-minute episodes)
Available on Apple TV Plus.
